Hatboro Family Seeks Closure Through Fundraising

Love4Liam was born after the death of a Hatboro couple's infant son.

William and Katie Twigg said good-bye to their 9-month old son, Liam, almost a year ago.

As the family comes up on the one-year anniversary of his passing, the Twiggs are seeking closure and trying to determine the cause of his untimely death.

“The top neurologists in the world reviewed my son’s autopsy,” William Twigg said. “Probably the most renowned people in the industry have come back with reports.”

Yet the Hatboro family is still no closer to knowing what caused their son to go to sleep on Oct. 27, 2012 and never wake again.

Liam, who was born in January 2012, was diagnosed with a host of medical issues, all stemming from a one-of-a-kind neurological condition, according to his father.

“It’s truly been something that’s never been seen before,” he said. “He was a special kid and this makes him even more special.”

With Liam in mind, William and Katie began a nonprofit organization, Love4Liam, almost immediately after his death. The goal, Mr. Twigg said, is to raise as much money as possible to fund research for children who are born with neurological issues.

Since Liam was been so “intertwined” with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Mr. Twigg said proceeds from Love4Liam fundraisers, including an Oct. 19 black tie ball in Horsham, would be funneled into the hospital to support its neurological research.

“Liam was brought on this earth for a reason,” he said. “This is what that reason was. We’re going to drive in hopes to see that it’s never forgotten.”

To date, the family has raised about $4,500, mainly through sweatshirt sales as part of Love4Liam.

Through the foundation–which is run by the Twiggs after their 5-year-old daughter goes to bed and between their combined three jobs–Mr. Twigg said he hopes to more than double the amount raised through ticket sales, raffles and more at the upcoming event in Horsham.

Doctors have told the Twiggs it could take 20 to 25 years of research to really know what went wrong with Liam. With each dollar raised the family feels closer to an answer.

“The worst thing to hear is that ‘we don’t know what happened to your son. We don’t know why he passed away,’ ” he said. “Everyone wants that closure.”

If you go

The Love4Liam black tie ball will be held on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m., 901 Horsham Road in Horsham. Tickets cost $40 and include dinner, dessert, a DJ, raffles, silent auction and more. Click here to see more on Patch’s events calendar.
