Cat Shack Needs Help to Save Lives of Sick, Injured Kitties

GoFundMe campaign in memory of Prudence the Cat seeks donations to support life-saving veterinary care for The Cat Shack foster cats that have severe medical conditions.

A dog may be man’s best friend, as the old saying goes, but at The Cat Shack, based in Trexlertown  (Lehigh County), the feline reigns supreme.

The Cat Shack is a no-kill non-profit shelter that works to find homes for cats in need. The typical cat that finds it way to The Cat Shack needs about $150 in medical care before it’s ready to be put up for adoption.

That could include spaying/neutering, updating vaccines and tests for Feline Leukemia and Feline HIV, according to The Cat Shack Web site.

Then there are the cats like Prudence. Prudence was found in the woods by a Cat Shack volunteer, the web site says.

Only 12 weeks old at the time, Prudence was alone in a drain, suffering from a week-old compound fracture of her left foot, a laceration to her face, malnutrition and a bacterial infection.

Prudence was treated by the Cat Shack vets, the web site explains, and amazingly survived her ordeal, although her back left foot ultimately needed to be amputated. In the end, the feisty three-legged kitty was adopted by The Cat Shack volunteer who found her.

Prudence lived to be almost five, succumbing to lymphoma in 2011. Her adopted mom, being so thankful for the time she had Prudence in her life, has created a memorial fund—the Prudence Memorial Emergency Medical Fund—to serve as a resource for the Cat Shack to help “other adoptable cats and kittens that have life-threatening injuries and illnesses that are treatable,” according to a web page about the Prudence and the fund.

In order to maintain the fund, a GoFundMe campaign has been established in Prudence’s name. One hundred percent of all donations to the fund go to emergency medical care for cats with severe medical conditions, like Prudence.

“Without the Prudence Memorial Funds we would be unable to offer the immediate care these cats need in order to survive. Almost all of these cats come to the Cat Shack with no donations and no time to fundraise for the care they desperately need,” the GoFundMe page says.

All cats and kittens that brought to The Cat Shack are kept until they find homes.
