Fundraising Walk to Honor H-H Teens Killed in Car Crash

Monday is the early registration deadline for the third annual fundraising walk honoring 2010 Hatters Edward Taylor Coombs and Robert Nagel, who died in a car crash in 2011.

Organizers of a popular fundraising run are hoping that moving the Horsham-based event to May will set a participant record and surpass last year’s more than 700 runners and walkers who put their feet to the pavement as part of the Team EC/RN 5K.

“Eddie and Robert’s friends who are actually in college can make the race,” Hatboro-Horsham High School senior Mary Strehl said of 2010 alums Edward Coombs and Robert Nagel, who died in a car crash in August 2011. The race had been held in October previously.

Mary, who lives next door to the Coombs family in Horsham Township, said she, along with Montana Morris and Kimberly Hench from the class of 2014, wanted to help keep the race’s positive momentum going. Last year’s event raised $9,000 for the Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation, a nonprofit organization which each year provides scholarships to local graduating seniors.

With the prospect of even more runners for the May 17 event at Hatters Stadium, Mary said she hopes that amount will be even higher.

“It’s a really good cause,” she said, adding that holding the 5K the week before the high school’s senior prom also drives home the significance of not drinking and driving. “It’s important to keep their memories in mind and learn from that tragic accident.”

In addition to event registrations, Mary said organizers are also planning fundraisers at several area eateries where, on specific dates, portions of customer purchases will be donated to the Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation. More information will be posted on the Edward Taylor Coombs Foundation Web site as details become available.
