International Women's Day Provides Another Reason to Celebrate Today

This year marks 100 years since the first International Women's Day event was held

Today isn't just a day for feasting on fattening fasnachts. It is also International Women's Day, an annual celebration which culminates every year on March 8.

According to the International Women's Day Web site, the very first International Women's Day event happened in 1911, making 2011 the "Global Centenary Year." International Women's Day acknowledges pioneering women's work with voting rights in particular; celebrates women's successes; and references inequities that still exist.

International Women's Day is also part of a larger women-centric movement, which also happens every March - the month-long Women's History Month.
