5 Things on Gearing up for Holiday Travel

Here are some tips ranging from when to depart for Thanksgiving plans, where to fuel and how to prepare.

1. Turkey Day is upon us. And, with bounties of food and family … comes lots of traffic. AAA Mid-Atlantic estimates more than 468,000 travelers from the Philadelphia area will travel 50 miles or more away from home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend - a 3.5 percent increase over last year. But, you can help beat holiday traffic jams by planning your travel for off-peak hours, or days, i.e., not Wednesday or the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

2. AAA also recommends fueling up with six to eight hours of sleep the night before traveling to decrease fatigue and increase reaction time.

4. While forecasters are calling for a sunny, 50-degree day on Thanksgiving, AAA suggests packing a winter car emergency kit including a shovel, jumper cables, ice scraper, wiper fluid, de-icer, kitty litter or salt for traction, first aid kit, flashlight, blanket, water, food and a cell phone before setting out for holiday travel.

5. Although you may be excited for a trip back to your old stomping ground, it may not be wise to post your travel plans on Facebook, twitter, or on an answering machine message as it could leave you susceptible to a break-in. Click here for more home safety tips while you’re away.
