1. No wonder people get sleepy after Thanksgiving Day dinner. The rule of thumb – or is that rule of turkey – is to plan on each person eating 1 1/3 pounds of turkey.

2. Last year, 736 million pounds of turkey were eaten in the U.S.

3. So, how did turkey become as much a Thanksgiving staple as stuffing and mashed potatoes? Apparently the other white meat had been raised – and feasted on – as early as the 1500s. When the Pilgrims arrived in 1620, eating turkey was already a tradition.

4. Now, that you know how to pick a turkey, it’s imperative to know how to properly prep it. Rule #1 is to check that your oven temperature is accurate BEFORE the big day.
