Maggie Shaffer fans 10 batters, Nicole Casagrand adds five strikeouts and Val Sadowl homers as Hatboro-Horsham closes out its non-conference season with a 10-2 victory against Crestwood.

Crestwood High School wanted to playing the defending PIAA 4-A softball champions so much, the Comets were willing to travel more than two hours from the Pocono Mountains on Thursday just to take a shot at .

Crestwood had its share of fun afterwards, when its gracious hosts treated the Mountain Top squad to a pizza party, but it was the Lady Hatters that provided most of the entertainment during the game on the way to a 10-2 victory.

Maggie Shaffer and Nicole Casagrand combined for 15 strikeouts against the free-swinging Comets, while shortstop Val Sadowl paced the Lady Hatter attack with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Sadowl was 2-for-3 at the plate and second baseman Jackie DiPietro continued her hot start from the leadoff spot by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

It was a memorable day for several Lady Hatter reserves. Freshman Jen Cader ripped an RBI double, while Adrienne Giuliani and Emily Wrenn smacked singles. It was the first varsity hit for each player.

"It was a good opportunity to see what some players could do off the bench," said Hatboro-Horsham coach Joe DiFilippo, who watched his team improve to 4-0. "If I have to go someplace for a pinch-hitter, or something, I know have somewhere to go."

The Lady Hatter JV squad (2-2) put together its best game of the season in a 16-3 victory over Crestwood.

Freshman pitcher Lexy Campbell shut down the Comet bats, allowing just two earned runs on a pair of solo home runs. Campbell also smacked a three-run homer.

First baseman Anna Mitchell stroked a pair of two-run singles to finish with a game-high four RBIs and made several nice defensive plays.

Both Lady Hatter teams will be on the road for the first time next week when they travel to Quakertown High on Tuesday for a 3:45 p.m. contest that will open Suburban One League play.
