Hatboro-Horsham Softballers Take Care of CB West

Nicole Casagrand and Emily Wrenn combine on a one-hitter, while Heather Lutz, Carlie Johnson and Jaynie Black lead a big offensive outburst in a 14-0 win over Central Bucks West.

Hatboro-Horsham High School was looking to take care of business on Thursday afternoon as one of the top softball programs in the PIAA took on a beleaguered Central Bucks West in a Continental Conference game.

And the Lady Hatters were workmanlike in executing a 14-0 victory at home that nudged them back into first place by themselves for a day.

Nicole Casagrand and Emily Wrenn combined for a one-hitter from the circle and the middle of the HHHS lineup, Heather Lutz, Carlie Johnson and Jaynie Black, were a combined 7-for-9, with six runs and five RBIs.

"The girls did a good job of adjusting to slower pitching, which isn't easy to do," said HHHS coach Joe DiFilippo.

The game wasn't in doubt for long as Hatboro-Horsham (8-1 overall, 5-1 in conference) erupted for five runs in the first inning.

The left-handed Casagrand allowed one hit in three innings, with four strikeouts and no walks before turning over the pitching to right-hander Wrenn, who was perfect the rest of the way.

CB West, struggling through a winless season at 0-10 and 0-6, only managed two base runners, with the other one coming on an error.

Freshman Andrea Baldus came off the bench to replace Adrienne Giuliani at second base late in the game and came through with her first varsity hit.

Central Bucks South and Central Bucks East play Friday, with the winner joining HHHS on top of the conference standings as the first round of play ends.

The JV Hatters also were victorious on Thursday, though they turned off the jets following a four-run first inning and only won 5-2.

That early outburst was about all pitcher Kaeli Simmons needed. The freshman hurler took a no-hitter into the fourth before a two-out double and single broke up her bid.

Simmons finished with a four hitter and fanned 11 batters, while walking only two and allowing just one earned run.

Center fielder Jamie Mroz was the offensive star for the JV Hatters with a double in two at-bats, a walk and three RBIs. Mroz also executed the front end of a nifty delayed double steal with Kaylin Mount in the sixth inning.

Hatboro-Horsham took advantage of two walks, two hit batters and Mroz's two-out double in the first inning to strike for those four quick runs.

The JV Hatters added a run in the third as Mroz picked up catcher Emmy Rivkin with an RBI ground out to short.

First baseman Jackie Locke contributed a run, a hit and four stolen bases. She was also hit by a pitch — one of three HHHS batters that were plunked in the game.

The Lady Hatters return to action Monday for 3:30 p.m. non-conference games at Crestwood before jumping back into conference play Tuesday at Central Bucks East at 3:45 p.m.
