Horsham Donuts Adds Bacon, Pumpkin to Menu

A locally owned doughnut shop in Horsham is betting on bacon.

Pancakes, bacon and syrup has to be one of the most traditional breakfasts.

At Horsham Donuts, the morning staples are combined into one fried, iced, bacon-topped offering: maple bacon bars.

"Everyone that I've said anything to about it has made that exact same face," Manager Kenny Stanchus said of Patch's surprised reaction to the long john that's grown in popularity recently. "All you need to think is breakfast because it's pancake, bacon and syrup all rolled into one."

Since opening in May, Stanchus, during an early morning doughnut-making session Tuesday, told Patch that the Horsham Road shop has expanded its offerings to include seasonal favorites like pumpkin and apple cider doughnuts, pumpkin latte, as well as sticky buns and a half dozen muffin varieties, including coffee, which contains actual coffee grains.

Horsham Donuts has also begun offering catering services for breakfast items ranging from bagels, doughnuts, muffins and breakfast sandwiches to coffees.

For four-legged friends, Horsham Donuts makes "doggy donuts," according to Stanchus. Filled with peanut butter and topped with cheese and bacon, the treats cost $2 for six doughnut holes.

To keep the doughnut-making operation up and running, Stanchus comes in every day at 2 a.m. to begin the day's baking. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Stanchus said he makes 350 doughnuts, while Fridays and Saturdays he prepares about 600 doughnuts.

A constant hustle, Stanchus shifts seemingly effortlessly between icing doughnuts, to frying coffee rings and readying others for filling. But, he said that was not always the case.

"It took a little while," Stanchus said of finding a work rhythm. "Before we opened, I never made a doughnut. I was actually the contractor remodeling the place."

Stanchus, who has years of food service experience, as well as restaurant management experience under his belt, oversees the day-to-day operations while the owner works his full-time job and chips in 25 or more hours a week.

"Running a restaurant is two complete full-time jobs," Stanchus said.

He admits that the business has not been bustling as much as he and Parkinson had hoped. Stanchus said he doesn't know if last month's opening of a Starbucks, directly across the street, has hurt Horsham Donuts.

"Our coffee and espresso drinks haven't really hit," he said of the Bucks County Coffee Co. offerings.

But, like the three dozen-a-day maple bacon bars, coffee specialties may just take time to catch on.
