Horsham Company Donates $2.5 Million to Help Vets Get Jobs

Penn Mutual donated the money to a local college to help train veterans for financial industry careers.

In an atrium packed with employees and military, , president and CEO of Penn Mutual, announced the Horsham-based company will be donating $2.5 million over five years to help establish a Center for Veterans Affairs at the American College in Bryn Mawr.

The announcement - which took place at a monthly recognition event meant to honor employee Andrew Lamarra, who served with the 111th Fighter Wing and 379th Air Expeditionary Wing in Qatar and Afghanistan - was met with cheers and applause. 

The Center for Veterans Affairs will allow active duty military personnel, reservists and veterans to train in a two-year program to learn to work in the life insurance and financial industry.

“This new center will touch thousands of lives and enable service members to transition into civilian life and pursue careers in the financial services industry,” said Allen Thomas, The American College vice president of advancement.

“The center is part of Penn Mutual’s commitment to our soldiers,” said McDonnell.

The program will feature online classes, which will enable military personnel to learn even when serving overseas, Thomas said.

In a statement, Associate Dean Allen C. McLellan, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, said unemployment among veterans is expected to increase as more troops return from overseas.

“Their hard work, dedication, focus, and ability to succeed in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds is exactly what the financial services industry needs during these challenging economic times,” he added.
