Giant Supermarkets Go Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness

The supermarket chain said it will donate more than $25,000 to breast cancer awareness and research through a variety of in-store initiatives.

Giant Food Stores is doing its part to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which happens throughout October.

The supermarket chain, which has a in Horsham, has launched promotions that give customers a way to support breast cancer research while picking up household staples.

Throughout October, for every pink reusable bag sold, Giant will donate five cents to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center and Susan G. Komen Maryland and West Virginia chapters.

The floral department will also make a 25 cent donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation every time a pink "awareness" or "hope and strength" bouquet is sold.

“This deadly disease impacts one out of eight women in the United States and we are proud to paint our stores pink to help raise awareness about breast cancer and preventative measures,” said Rick Herring, president of Giant. “By donating five cents from the sale of each pink reusable bag this month, we are also proud to support local organizations in our community as they work to find a cure.”

Several brands that Giant carries have also pitched in to help the effort. When customers buy certain items from Proctor & Gamble, General Mills, Giant’s store brands and other participating vendors throughout the month, Giant and the accompanying vendor partner will make a donation to a local organization that supports breast cancer research, education and awareness.

There's perks for the cutomer, too. When customers buy those specific products, they will receive rewards such as a $10 prepaid Visa card or money off of their grocery order.

Giant said it also wants to hear your personal stories. For every person who shares their breast cancer story on Giant’s Facebook page, the store will make a $1 donation - up to $5,000 - to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition

The store said it would also work to educate its customers by handing out brochures about breast self-examination to customers at the in-store pharmacy.
