Final Chapter Begins for Abby's Bookcase

Two groups of people come into Abby's Bookcase on County Line Road to shop for some cheap, used books. There are the longtime, loyal customers who love browsing the endless rows of paperbacks to pick out the next adventure or love story.

Then there are the new people who immediately appreciate the lived in, familiar-feeling store that has more personality in one bookshelf than an entire Barnes & Noble.

Owner Abby Cohen can't decide which group has been the toughest to inform that she is closing her store within the next four weeks.

"The longtime customers who care so much for the store are really upset," said Cohen. "But the new ones tell me how much they love this place, and I have to wonder why they did not come in before."

After 20 years of providing used books at discount prices, Cohen could no longer compete with the digital age. The popularity of e-books combined with an Internet marketplace became too much for the small business owner to overcome.

"It's always been hard," said Cohen, "but it's much harder than it used to be. This store has been a success longer than other people have managed."

Before she locks the doors for good, Cohen wants to sell as much of her 50,000-plus inventory. All of the books are 50 percent off, plus she is selling the shelves and giving away cassette tapes. Once Abby's Bookcase closes, Cohen will look for local organizations that need book donations, including schools, libraries, womens' shelters and nursing homes.
