Family-Owned Bakery Opens Sunday

Nonno's Bakery joins Hatboro's downtown.

Paula Randazzo and Dominica DiMaggio were practically born with baking utensils in their hands.

The sisters–who jointly own Nonno's Bakery in Hatboro with several other family members, including Randazzo's husband, Salvatore, the main baker–grew up making dozens of Italian cookies alongside their grandmother.

When she died, the sisters "continued that family tradition for the holidays," according to DiMaggio.

In a matter of days, the New York natives will bring the tradition of biscotti, anise cookies, gelato, marzipan fruit, cannolis, various "unique pastries" fresh-made bread crumbs, special occasion cakes and ice cream cakes and more to 100 S. York Road.

"Everything's made here from scratch," Paula Randazzo said.

As far as the bakery's specialty, Randazzo said semolina bread would probably be a hot commodity, because, "nobody has that here."

The family has been working since last summer to convert the space formerly occupied by Juliano's Deli to suit the bakery's needs. DiMaggio said her husband, John, who works in construction, led the renovation efforts, which she said cost about $100,000.

DiMaggio, who's having a home built in Perkasie, said leaving Brooklyn for the 'burbs was a natural choice.

"All of our lives we've been coming back and forth to Pennsylvania," she said. "We have relatives here."

The icing on the cake in terms of the family's decision to relocate is that Italian-style baked goods are "in high demand," according to DiMaggio.

Named after the owners' deceased grandfathers, the sisters said the family's first business endeavor is dedicated to them.

In the days leading up to Sunday's opening, DiMaggio estimated that the family would bake thousands of cookies. On a recent afternoon, as scents of fresh-baked goods wafted through the bright, cafe-style store, Salvatore busily worked flouring and rolling biscotti in the newly expanded kitchen.

"We call this the laboratory," DiMaggio said of the kitchen.

And how many goodies will be cooked up in the lab on a regular basis?

"We don't know until we open up Sunday," Randazzo said. "As we go on, we'll have more."

If you go
Nonno's Bakery, 100 S. York Road in Hatboro, will open on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. At least to start, the bakery will be open daily those hours. A grand opening is set for Oct. 12.
