Consigning 101

  • Most shops pay consigners an agreed upon fee for items sold, usually in the 40 percent to 60 percent range, meaning consigners receive a pre-determined percentage of the selling price. (The exceptions are consignment and thrift shops like Impact, Salvation Army and Goodwill, which donate proceeds to charity).
  • Second-hand stores generally set the prices for items.
  • Consignment periods usually last for 90 days. Typically, items not sold during that time must be picked up.
  • For clothing, consider consigning items in season, or just prior to the start of a new season.
  • To get the most value for your goods, consider selling items in new, or next-to-new condition.
