Respect the Crosswalk

One runner's expresses concern over the safety of Horsham crosswalks along the powerline trail. Maybe increased police presence will improve driver's respect for pedestrians.

I usually write about the  angle. It is my passion. But today I have some thoughts on a new passion of mine - running. In the last few months, I have become quite a runner as my neighbor and I have been hitting the pavement for about 15 miles a week. It is a peaceful, invigorating start to the morning - until we have to cross the street.

We use the PECO powerline trail, which we are so fortunate to have here in Horsham. But, we are terribly concerned about the total disregard area drivers have for the crosswalks along the trail. We diligently slow down at the lighted crosswalks, turn on the flashing lights and wait and wait and wait. Sometimes six or seven cars fly by us, paying no attention to the flashing lights and two adults waving for them to slow down and stop. We have even been shown foul gestures by a driver or two.

My greater concern is for our children. Many kids use the powerline trail and have to cross busy roads on bikes. They often lack the judgement and patience to wait for drivers to stop or judge stopping distances. These crosswalks were put in place to encourage health and wellness in our community. Our fellow neighbors and children deserve a bit of consideration and respect for their safety before our town is the subject of some unfortunate incident on the evening news. Let's all slow down and be more conscientious of others.
