Are You Leaving the Door Open to Trouble?

Rain leaking under your garage door? Do cooler temps bring furry friends looking to hide from winter in your garage? Learn how to secure your garage entry from rain, ice and rodents.

With all the rain we've had, you may have noticed rain seeping in under your garage door. The reality is that if rain is getting in so are furry field mice. If you don't want your house to become the local mouse motel, install this DIY garage threshold seal. It also adds energy efficiency by keeping your garage sealed from weather extremes.

Thresholds are easy to install, just takes a few minutes and requires basic tools. Try this kit from Home Depot.

Here are a few hints to get it done right and done quickly:

  • Close the garage door and mark floor with chalk where door meets floor
  • Use a utility knife to cut the threshold to length
  • Be sure the garage floor is clean and dry before applying sealant
  • Apply sealant liberally in a swiggle line
  • Use an electrical cap to save left-over sealant

Products are available to seal the sides of the garage door. Another type of seal is available to fit the bottom edge of your garage door. It is a rubber track that slides into the bottom edge and collapses flat when door meets floor. Some door seals are universal, but know the brand of your door to be sure you have the right fit. Don't wait until temperatures are too cool and don't leave the vacancy sign out for the critters.
