7 Steps to Prepare Your Home for Winter's Wrath

Short list of services that homeowners should have done to their home before winter weather creates home maintenance issues.

Ladies, don't wait until you are freezing your pinky toes and left with no heat.  Follow these steps to get your home ready to weather the winter before you are left out in the cold. Hot toddies just won't cut it.

  • Buy a cover for your A/C unit and protect it from ice and snow
  • Change your heater's air filter now and every three months
  • Order firewood early and save money
  • Order heating oil early and see if you can lock in your price for later
  • Have fireplace flue cleaned
  • Have your heating system serviced
  • Have sprinkler systems drained to prevent freezing in water line

HIP Chicks loves to DIY, but you should be calling the pros for roofing, chimney care, heating and A/C service. If you burn many wood fires, you need to have a professional chimney sweep done to prevent fires flaring up in the flue from built up creosote. Yearly service on your heating/cooling system is vital to keep it running smoothly. Service may include changing belts, replacing worn parts and cleaning key parts. Avoid losing heat in the dead of winter and be prepared now.
