For its fall concerts, The Choristers will present a concert version of Porgy and Bessby George Gershwin accompanied by four hands piano.  Soloists will be Rosella Washington (Soprano), Taiwan Norris (Tenor) and Frank Mitchell (Bass).  Originally conceived by Gershwin as an American folk opera, the work incorporates a wealth of blues and jazz idioms into the classical art form of opera.  The soloists and choir will present many of the well-known favorites including “Summertime”, “A Woman is a Sometime Thing”, “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”  Following in the theme of American folk songs, the choir will also present Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs.  This work, comprised of traditional 1800s tunes, was gathered by Copland from minstrels, lullabies, hymns and children’s songs.  By keeping the melodic material of most of the original songs intact, Copland showed fidelity toward the folk cultures from which they came.  What wonderful evenings of music!
