Teach a Child To Read With RSVP

This Montgomery County program seeks volunteers to help youngsters learn.

Are you searching for a way to give back to your community? The Montgomery County RSVP program could use your help.

Children as young as ages 4 to 5 learn to read through the Head Start program, called Child Literacy with RSVP, and they can only do so with the assistance of volunteers at RSVP.

There are 18 districts in the county that use the aid provided by RSVP volunteers. The Child Literacy is hosted in 30 classrooms throughout the county, including in the communities of Lansdale, Norristown, Green Lane, Pottstown, Conshohocken, Abington, Souderton and North Hills.

"With just an hour or two each week you will read to a class, to small groups or one-on-one," said RSVP Volunteer Coordinator Janis Glusman. "You can help children learn to love books while reinforcing their knowledge of letters, colors and numbers."

RSVP works with the America Reads program.

"America Reads is an initiative to help all children read well by fourth grade," said Glusman. "Reading coaches work with selected students to help them become better readers and make reading fun."

Those that wish to tutor children will be given a free training by RSVP.

"An initial two-hour training outlines basic strategies to help the volunteer plan a coaching session," said Glusman. "Support, workshops, guidance, activities and games and expertise from reading specialists are provided throughout the year."
