New School Crossing Flashers Planned

Hatboro is looking to upgrade school crossing flashers in an active school zone.

Improvements to crossings for kids en route to school in Hatboro could get underway this summer.

As the borough awaits approval of a $215,000 Montgomery County Community Development Block Grant to upgrade crossings for children walking to school in the area of Horsham, Moreboro and Academy roads, officials intend to install new school crossing flashers sometime this summer.

Borough Manager Fred Zollers said officials did not include school crossing flashers in the grant application and since the cost is minimum–$3,400–Zollers said crews would replace them before the start of the school year.

“It needs to be done,” Zollers said. “Some of the parts for the school flashers are before the 1970s.”

Zollers said the borough would “squeeze out” the unbudgeted expense from its regular traffic signal maintenance funds.

The Hatboro Borough Council is expected to vote to authorize installation of the new devices during its June 24 meeting.
