Horsham Doctor Charged in Painkiller Death

A year after being charged as part of a 498-count indictment, Horsham doctor Norman Werther faces charges stemming from a drug overdose death.

A Horsham doctor who is believed to be at the center of a two-year drug trafficking ring, has been charged with causing a man's death by overdose, according to an article in the Seattle Post Intelligencer

Dr. Norman Werther, 73, of Horsham, who federal authorities charged in August 2011 as the alleged ringleader in a scam to unlawfully acquire and distribute more than 200,000 pills containing oxycodone from September 2009 and July 2011, is accused of illegally prescribing hundreds of oxycodone tablets to the victim in 2010, according to the article. The charges, which the article said were unsealed Thursday, are the latest against Werther.

Werther, who remains free on bail, was charged last year in connection with an alleged scheme involving a Northeast Philadelphia pharmacist to provide exams to fake patients, and in doing so, write phony prescriptions to obtain oxycodone-based drugs without there being a medical need.
