Graeme Park Offers Colonial-Style Valentine's Day Program

Kids can learn about Valentine's Day history around the world

Valentine’s Day comes to Horsham with an international flair and historic intrigue as Graeme Park reprises its annual Colonial Valentine program on Saturday and hosts its new children’s Valentine’s Day Around the World program on Sunday.  The grounds surround the Keith House, which is the only surviving residence of a Pennsylvania colonial governor.

Colonial Valentine guests will watch candle-lit historical interpretations in the Keith House by actors playing the roles of the park’s famed socialite and poet Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson and her loved ones, as they tell the tale of her engagement to Ben Franklin’s son William, and an ill-fated marriage to Henry Hugh Fergusson, a man whose British loyalties would leave her in financial ruin.

“I think that our Valentine’s Day program is one of the truest, historically-accurate representations of Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson and her life here at Graeme Park from the 1750s through the 1790s," said Beth MacCausland, president of The Friends of Graeme Park. "Plus we have a sweets table. What more do you want?”

The new Valentine’s Day Around the World program will give children the opportunity to experience international Valentine’s Day traditions as they gather together in the visitors center to make traditional crafts and sample goodies.  “Each country has a thing that they focus on, like Denmark does pressed flowers,” said Carla Loughlin, the park’s museum associate.

Children’s $5 admission for Valentine’s Day Around the World includes a free tour of the Keith House. Adults’ tour tickets are $3, half of the regular ticket price. The admission for A Colonial Valentine is $12, which includes refreshments; this program is for adults.
