Everything You Need to Know About Horsham Day

From what's new to where to park, this article shares all you need to know for the township's annual Horsham Day event on Saturday.

If you and your family have grown up with Horsham Day, you'll be happy to know that the traditional fishing derby, car show and fireworks display are mainstays for 2013.

But, what about new additions?

Horsham Day attendees–if the "wind cooperates"–could take flight in a hot air balloon ride, Mark Hudson, Horsham's Park and Recreation director, said.

"We tried it last year," he said of the walk through at Carpenter Park, which will be moved to Deep Meadow Park. "They’re going to take a hot air balloon and lay it on its side and you’ll be able tot walk inside."

Besides ballooning, softball and volleyball tournaments will be happening at Samuel Carpenter Park.

On fields six, eight and 11 of Deep Meadow Park, eight teams comprised of Keith Valley Middle School students will participate in a kickball tournament to raise money for charity, according to Hudson.

Speaking of charity, the Horsham Lions Club will again be selling roast pork sandwiches and "carving right off the pig," according to Lion Andy Weiss. In years past, the fundraiser has generated $1,200, according to Weiss.

"The money isn't earmarked for any specific purpose," Weiss said. "It will go toward scholarships, eyeglasses, eye exams, summer camps for blind kids, and general charitable causes."

The Greater Horsham Chamber of Commerce, the entity organizing Horsham Day, along with the township, will showcase its foodservice members via "Restaurant Row" at Deep Meadow Park.

Cuisine from chamber members, including Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, Chick-fil-A, Corner Bakery Café, Horsham Pizza, Horsham Pub, Lee's Hoagie House, Main Street Pizzeria & Grill, naBrasa/Iron Abbey, Nino's Pizzarama, The Pizza Wagon, and Tonelli's Pizza Pub will be available for purchase.

“Restaurant Row” will be open from 11 a.m. until dusk and the Business Courtyard, showcasing nearly 40 businesses, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., also in Deep Meadow Park.

Some 20 organizations from the chamber’s Nonprofit Roundtable will offer hands-on activities for children from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. along the “Nonprofit Promenade.”

The Chamber will fundraise for its nonprofit members with cow plop bingo. If the cow "plops" in a single block, the winner will receive $1,000; if she plops” in an adjoining corner or on a line, the winnings will be split accordingly as determined by the judges. Nine dollars from each $10 ticket goes directly to the organization that sold it.

Prior to the daylong festivities at multiple township locations along Horsham Road, the Horsham Rotary Club will kick off the annual community event with a "revamping" of its Friday night bingo to make it "more of a family bingo," Hudson said.

Last minute tips

Be sure to park at Hatboro-Horsham High School, 899 Horsham Road and take the free shuttle to the township parks, or municipal complex for Horsham Day festivities, Hudson suggests. Shuttles begin at 10:30 a.m. and "run until after the fireworks are over," he said.

Horsham Day volunteers and vendors are the only ones permitted to park at the Horsham Township municipal complex, he said.

And with Saturday's forecasted "real feel" temperature of 94 degrees, Hudson said it would be a good idea to keep pets at home and make sure everyone stays hydrated.

If you go

Horsham Day features numerous activities simultaneously at Deep Meadow Park, Samuel Carpenter Park, Kohler Park, as well as the Horsham Township Municipal Complex. Festivities begin at 8 a.m. with a 5K and continue until the fireworks. Click here for more information on Horsham Day.
