Keith Valley Middle School Inducts Nearly 100 Students into New Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society

Nearly 90 Keith Valley Middle School students were given the opportunity to be the first inductees into the new chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Jan. 30. The National Association of Secondary School Principals welcomed 91 eighth graders into the Keith Valley chapter of NJHS.

“The National Junior Honor Society recognizes the students that are making positive decisions and positive contributions to the community,” advisor Christine Fleming said. “It’s all about the day-to-day decisions students make that lead to good academic standing and community involvement. We want to honor those students.”

In order to be part of the Keith Valley NJHS, students needed a GPA from the 2012-13 school year of 85 or higher; performed a significant number of community service hours outside of school; demonstrated interest in being a part of the school community; shown leadership qualities; and be recommended by a teacher. For students to stay a member, they must continue excelling in academics and performing individual community service.

“This is a motivational factor for students to make good choices,” Fleming said. “The eighth graders are getting ready to go to high school and this is a good chance to show them that good decisions are recognized. The junior society also introduces them into the honor society, so in high school they can aim to be invited to apply for membership.”

Students were able to hear about the National Honor Society (NHS), when Hatboro-Horsham High School chapter President Maddy Wawrzyniak visited as guest speaker for the ceremony. Wawrzyniak shared with students some of the benefits she has found from being part of NHS and tips for success at the high school level.

Since the chapter is just beginning, only eighth graders were inducted in at this time.  Seventh graders meeting criteria will be inducted late this spring.
