There are some fairy tales that need no explaining: a prince meets a princess, a boy grows a bean stalk and a girl in a red cape visits her grandmother. But what happens if they all occur together? Sheer chaos ensues, as seen in Hatboro-Horsham High School’s spring musical, “Into the Woods,” playing April 3, 4 and 5.
“Most high schools don’t attempt ‘Into the Woods,’” Producer and Director Lisa Stunder. “It is such a complex show, with one song leading into another. However, our students perform at a near professional level and we felt they could handle a show like this. They’ve done an amazing job bringing it all together.”
Audiences will recognize Cinderella, Jack, Red Ridinghood and Rapunzel as their tales intertwine with Baker family to learn some extra lessons. These classic Grimm fairy tales get an unusual twist as all characters travel into the woods. The story, beginning like many other tales with “Once upon a time…” and a wicked witch, details the journey each character takes to learn what happiness really is.

“This show is neat because it doesn’t just teach one lesson,” Stunder said. “Each person in the audience, based on their own life experiences, will find a different meaning in this show.”
Audiences will laugh and cry as beloved children’s tale characters stumble through misadventures, find not-so-true love and realize happily ever after isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The musical includes over 100 students, including stage crew, cast and light and sound production, making it the largest extracurricular activity in Hatboro-Horsham School District.

“This show is based on the original Grimm fairy tales, so it’s cool to see how each was originally intended to play out,” Stunder said. “We are accustomed to the Disney versions of each story, where the characters live happily ever after, which is rarely the case in the original version.”
This show is a great family event to bring your older children to. The costumes, the story and the music are sure to dazzle anyone, from middle school age to senior citizens. This show is not recommended for children younger than 12-years-old.
Hatboro-Horsham High School Theatre Department welcomes audiences at 7:30 p.m. for performances. Tickets for students and seniors are $8, while adults are $10.
