GIANT's Passport to Nutrition offers fun & healthy ideas for kids

As part of its commitment to providing health and wellness resources to its many communities, GIANT Food Stores and MARTIN’S Food Markets have updated and expanded their popular Passport to Nutrition program. First introduced in 2010, Passport to Nutrition is a fun, interactive program that provides the necessary tools to educate kids on nutrition and living healthy lifestyles both at home and at school.

“While the issue of childhood obesity and what can be done to combat it continues to remain top of mind for families and teachers, many schools and organizations are experiencing cuts to programs that help educate kids about nutrition,” said Maryann Moylan, GIANT/MARTIN’S nutritionist. “Passport to Nutrition is offered free of charge and offers many ideas to help kids live healthier lifestyles. Check it out this summer to see how you may be able to utilize in your classroom or for an upcoming extracurricular program.”

Geared to children ages 8-12, GIANT/MARTIN’S free Passport to Nutrition kit now features student workbooks and a teacher guide that provide lessons which inspire kids to make small changes every day for better health, including how to build a balanced plate using the new MyPlate guidelines, how to read food labels, and understand portion sizes. Posters illustrating MyPlate and food labels are also included to visually reinforce lessons learned. The Passport to Nutrition kit also includes a DVD featuring challenges, kid-friendly songs, and games which can be adapted for classroom use.  Previously, Passport to Nutrition was accessible only from the company website.

Passport to Nutrition was developed with the help of GIANT/MARTIN’S in-store nutritionists.  GIANT/MARTIN’S is one of the few grocery store chains in the country to offer the services of a nutritionist right in the store and currently has five in-store nutritionists available in stores across its market area. If interested in obtaining a complete Passport to Nutrition kit, teachers and organizational leaders can email a request to PTNkit.giantfoodstores.group@giantmartins.com
