CROOKED BILLET 3RD GRADERS ARE DOG GONE EXCITED ABOUT VISITORS THAT ROCK!

During November, Julie Maloney’s third-grade class at Crooked Billet Elementary School welcomed two special visitors.

On November 22, after the class read Rosie, A Visiting Dog’s Story, the children met a trained therapy dog and heard all about her life. This visit helped students draw connections between information learned in the book and real life. Students enthusiastically asked questions.

Just four days later, the discussion took a rocky turn when the class was visited by Jill Murray, a geologist, on November 26. The information presented during this visit supported what the students have been studying about Earth Materials. They learned how the rock cycle (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) is a natural phenomenon that transforms one type of rock into another and eventually back to the original state. Students rolled up their sleeves to recreate the rock cycles, with play dough colors representing each cycle.

“The class found both visitors to be very informative and entertaining. We were fortunate to have them join us.” said Maloney.
