'Snack Shack' Gets Facelift

An Upper Moreland resident is painting a new mural at Hatboro Memorial Pool.

Nachos and cheese, corn dogs and popcorn. You can get it all of that and more at Hatboro Memorial Pool’s Snack Shack.

And, soon enough pool-goers will have a bright-hued reminder of the goodies available for purchase courtesy of Upper Moreland resident Lora Rowland, who’s been taking time before the concession stand opens and after it closes to paint a mural on the 26-foot-wide by 8-foot-high stand.

“This is the only place I did anything public,” said Rowland, a 2005 Upper Moreland High School grad and former Hatboro Pool lifeguard, who, while working there, had painted the previous concession stand art. “They renovated the snack stand and they wanted to have it painted again. I had no problem repainting basically a new mural.”

In return for her beautification efforts, the Hatboro Borough Council, during last month’s meeting, approved giving Rowland a complimentary pool membership.

“I volunteered to do this. Getting me a free membership is really a bonus,” said Rowland, whose summers growing up were spent swimming in the pool. “It’s a piece of my childhood.”

Fast forward to 2010 when she painted the first mural and Rowland, who works as a freelance artist, said it was “definitely a cool feeling” to hear people remark about her painting. She has even higher hopes for her latest masterpiece, which she expects to finish soon.

“This brightens up the place,” Rowland said. “People really enjoy seeing things like that.”

Hope she pays taxes on this form of "compensation". Isn't Johnny Zygmont a CPA? Oh wait, CPA must stand for "Certifier of Pool Art".

Just to be clear, she isn't being paid to do this. The council approved giving her a pool membership, but her work is solely volunteer.

Lora, that's awesome! I hope they post pictures when the mural is done. I don't belong to the swim club to see it in person. Good luck!

A true work of HeArt. Lora is a talented young woman. I can't wait to seeing this mural!
She certainly deserves the "thank you" given by council.
