Should Hatboro Council Receive Free Pool Membership?
Workers employed by Hatboro receive free memberships for the Hatboro Memorial Pool - should elected officials be extended that same courtesy?
People employed by Hatboro's government receive free seasonal memberships to the Hatboro Memorial Pool, so why shouldn't the governing body also be entitled to the same benefit?
Councilman Mark Sheedy posed the question during Monday night's borough council meeting. Many of the seven council members shook their heads no that the council should not be entitled to free pool memberships.
One of the exceptions, however, was Council President John Zygmont.
"The last time I checked I get a W-2 from the borough," Zygmont said. "That makes me an employee."
While Zygmont said he would not use the membership himself, he said "it would be appropriate" for council members to have complimentary pool memberships and that he would "encourage our council people to go there."
"I really think if we got a policy, it’s alredy covered by the policy," Zygmont added. "I don’t think we’re voting to give ourselves something."
Hatboro resident and pool member Harry Honer disagreed.
"Talk the talk. Walk the walk," Honer said. "Pay for the membership."
Do you think Hatboro elected officials are entitled to a free membership at the Hatboro Memorial Pool? Tell us in the comments.

Absolutely NOT. They are ELECTED by the people to serve the people. Boro employees, specifically Public Works and Police, are afforded the free pool membership as part of their negotiated contracts. Zyggy wants to use his free membership for the grandkids. Thank you HH for speaking up!

This meeting was being held because council memebers are concerned about the pools ability to generate revenue, and they want free memberships? As an elected official, shouldn't you proudly pay for a membership, enjoy a great pool, and help bring money in for our pool/town?... For people who have been elected to make our town better, that's pretty lame...

If you want perks work in the private sector don't take from the people paying for the memberships (township residents). Unfortunately nothing is free.

Absolutely not. Pool membership should be considered part of the compensation package for hired workers, not a gimme for council members.

Actually, I'm not against the Council getting a free Pool membership, regardless of party being on Council is generally a tough job, one that comes with very little money (something like 2,000 dollars a year) and a pay rate that is way under minimum wage when you count all the hours they end up working. It would encourage those on council to come to the pool and be able to make more informed decisions about it and the people who go to it. As long as the membership is just for the individual and not for anyone else, I doubt many of them would take advantage of it anyway and as long as it doesn't become a bring your whole family thing for free...

They should pay.

I agree with Scott, as long as it is used for the counsel member and/or spouse ONLY. Why not !

I think they should pay for the privilege of swimming in a pool, until a child poops or pukes. Then they can enjoy sitting poolside for 3 hours while cleanup occurs. They should also enjoy paying for a membership, even though the pool will close for the summer after flooding, that WILL occur. They should then enjoy no refund. On a really good day, they can enjoy a bus load of campers being dropped off everyday for 3 hours. Oh! And the bridge ladies! Truly the most enjoyable part, no extra charge.

I would pay a double membership fee to NOT see some of these guys in their swim trunks.

I think it's a great idea! Council members should be REQUIRED to spend time at the pool. Just mixing in with us regular folk, listening to what we have to say. I'd pay for Zyg as my guest.

Council members already have it made. A whopping $2000 a year and the luxury of dealing with all you whining, Not In My Back Yard, Nobody Deserves Something I don't Get...sissies, is more than enough compensation. They can swim with me anytime. I'm there every Tuesday and Wednesday. Just don't come near me when I'm just kinda hanging on the edge. That's how I pee when I have to. How 'bout that for a Patch Poll. "Do you pee in the pool?" Follow that up with, "Do you pee in the shower?" Heck, "Do you pee in the bath?" (even I think that one is gross). The patch could get three or four days of content more interesting than junk about who eats dinner with who, or a new turd depot being installed in one of Horsham's 83 parks.

No, that would be a bad idea. The membership isn't that expensive to begin with and they should proudly pay the fee like everyone else. I think a discount maybe appropriate, but free is not for me!

Thar she blows! is former council president Marianne Reymer, and do we really want to see her in a bathing suit? Lets take a survey on that one? Apparently she is quick to point out that other council members should not be seen in a bathing suit. Happy In Hatboro is definately former Councilmember Nancy Guenst who spent many a day swimming at the pool on the taxpayers dime. Can you show us great people of Hatboro your membership Ms. Guenst?

Hi Ethel-
I have a pool. My dad put it in when I was 10 years old, and I use it every day in the summer, so no, I never used the Hatboro Pool. I would go there alot when I was on council just to say hi to the staff and customers and to talk with people to see how we could improve things there. My chair on council was parks and recreation so that was also one of my responsibilities, but also my pleasure, to serve the people.

Timing is everything. To propose free membership for council at the same time they ask residents to pay more is a good example of poor timing. Personally, I don't see why there should be any exceptions. Either everyone that uses the facility should pay for the privilege, or no Hatboro-Horsham resident should pay because they already are in their taxes. (Which would no doubt increase to cover the cost.)

R - you are dead on. If the taxpayers own the pool - why do they have to pay to use it? The fact that politians and public employees get a free membership does not bother me as much as the idea of Hatboro owning and running a pool. Sell the thing.

*Worrying about themselves and what they can afford.
The bigger the car in the driveway, the bigger the payment and the debt.
MOST parents today, don't show their kids love, they buy them material items, which don't been crap. Be a parent, not a friend.
God bless those with little children today, there is no hope for their future. 21 or 22 with average of $80,000 in student loan debt and then a job making $10 an hour. OR the other option, a college scholarship for the"poor" people, so those kids can do NOTHING with it.
God Bless America!

Horsham residents should not pay a higher rate, when we share a middle and high school?

I didn't think that Horsham residents paid for Hatboro's pool. And I thought the Little League fields were in the Upper Moreland section of Hatboro. All this confusion over a pool fee!
