UPDATE: Pedestrian Survives Being Struck By Train in Hatboro

The Bensalem man, who was hit by a SEPTA commuter train Monday night in Hatboro, was taken to the hospital.

A 34-year-old Bensalem man was struck by a  regional rail train Monday evening at 8:19 p.m. near where two suicides by train occurred last month.

Police said the victim, Steven Joseph Bond, who was hit on the tracks between Jacksonville Road and East Moreland Avenue, was alive and taken by ambulance to Abington Memorial Hospital for treatment. Hatboro Police Chief James Gardner said Tuesday afternoon that Bond was on a ventilator and reported to be in critical condition.

Gardner said police believe the man was wearing headphones while walking along the tracks and may not have heard the approaching train.

"We’re not sure on this if this was an accident yet or if this guy wanted to be hit," Gardner said. "At some point we hope to talk to him and shed a little light on it."

Gardner, as well as SEPTA officials, pointed out that the railroad tracks are SEPTA property and are not a safe place to walk at any time. Doing so is considered trespassing.

As a result of Bond being hit by a train Monday night, SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams said service between Willow Grove and Warminster was suspended until about 11 p.m. Monday as SEPTA and Hatboro police officials investigated the incident.

Investigators were seen taking measurements and inspecting the train as it sat on the tracks behind the . A ladder truck from the was used to help investigators get an above ground view of the scene.

According to a schedule on the SEPTA Web site, the train was headed from Warminster to the Hatboro train station at the time of incident.

Monday's incident is the third in a month. The site is very close to the locations of last month's suicides by train, which killed on June 21 and on June 18.
