Hatboro YMCA Sets Practice Sites for Swim Team

Following the announcement that the Hatboro Area YMCA would close its outdoor pool, the Hatboro Hurricanes had been displaced from a practice site–until now.

After two months of searching, the Hatboro Area YMCA has found a partner to help host its summer swim team practices.

From June 17 until the last meet in mid to late July, Hatboro Hurricane team members can practice at Abington High School's indoor pool from 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Monday through Friday, according to YMCA Spokeswoman Omoiye Kinney. Participants unable to practice in the morning can swim in the Hatboro Y's indoor pool the following days and times: Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

For the season kickoff from May 20 through June 14, Kinney said the team will practice evenings at the Hatboro Y's indoor pool as in past years.

Families planning to have their children participate in the Hatboro Y's summer swim team and summer day camp will also be offered an additional practice option, allowing for morning practice at the Y's indoor pool, Kinney said.

"By offering two practice locations, a morning option, an evening option and a camper option, the Hatboro Y will continue to offer high quality programming with an expanded practice option," Kinney said.

Summer home swim meets will continue to be held at the Hatboro Memorial Pool on Tuesday or Thursday evenings. The meet schedule will be announced in late May, according to Kinney.

The Hatboro Area YMCA's announcement in January that it intended to close its outdoor pool in order to expand its parking lot in the short-term, or expand the facility in the long-term, left the swim team potentially without a place to practice.

YMCA officials spent the next two months coordinating with other community pools to see if any could accommodate the team's practice schedule.

The team's practice sites were finalized just in time for summer swim team registration, which Kinney said is now underway. For more information, or to register, contact coach Bre Levy at blevy@philaymca.org.
