Extra, Extra: Hatboro Considers Newsletter

The council is expected to take action at its Feb. 27 meeting.

Ever wonder what’s going on in your community?

The Hatboro Borough Council is hoping to keep residents informed of borough happenings through a new newsletter, to be published by Perkasie-based Hometown Press. The governing body is slated to take formal action at its Feb. 27 voting meeting.

If that happens, work will begin immediately on the first edition, which Councilman Bob Hegele said is planned for spring or summer.

The first issue would be free, according to Hegele and subsequent issues – including a fall/winter 2012 edition - would cost Hatboro about $600 based on the 20 cents per copy price to mail it to borough homeowners and business owners.

Hegele said Hometown Press solicits local businesses for ads to cover the publishing expense, leaving the municipality with only postage costs. Previously, the borough spent $1,600 and $2,000 for each of its newsletters, which he said ceased publishing three or four years ago.

“I think it’s pretty much a no-brainer,” Hegele said of switching operations to Hometown Press.

Chuck is right! Wasn’t this the crew that spoke of “draconian cuts”? Free now is not free later, where will that money come from?

Working website is important, but I think this is a great idea, too. Informed residents will get involved and that involvement could help the Borough and bring a return on a small investment. Not all residents are online. Older folks and low-income residents might not have easy internet access. I think communicating with tax-payers, especially in a small community like ours, is a valid responsibility of our local government. Thanks, Mr. Hegele.

My husband & I each spent over 20 years in the printing industry~both of us no longer because of the paperless wave into the future. 1st couple issues should request email addresses to go this direction & also this would give the folks without this option to continue receiving it snail mail. Costs are far less this way, we save trees & you can promote so many other community links at the same time.

I think this is a great idea. It would promote a sense of community. The cost is really negotiable. As a Hatboro-loving homeowner, I would be willing to help fund the newsletter for those without connectivity.

How about mailing the news letter with our tax bill. "Save the postage". Post the news letter on the web in a pdf format. The Borough should try to use a Hatboro printer for the newsletter. Buxmont has a nice copier that could run them for pennies a copy.

20 cents per household is about as inexpensive as you can get. Any form of communication will be an improvement to the Borough as a whole. This is a great idea, long overdue.

It would seem to me that the Borough need only hold open meetings, discuss items that they feel need to be publicized and rely upon Theresa and other members of the local media to get out the reports. Then again, maybe the idea behind the newsletter is to provide a vehicle for Council to tell residents what they want them to hear (and ignore those pesky details that reporters seem to uncover).

This is a great idea, but not a new one. I remember getting these before, last one was about two years ago. Whoever got the job to write these over the last two years must have just dropped the ball. Agree that the website needs to be properly maintained, but I'm pretty happy with the updates to the TV channel. Every avenue helps when it comes to keeping residents informed!

Most towns are using free Facebook and Twitter accounts to communicate with its residents. Hatboro is dumping cash on junk mail nobody will read. Way to go Bob.

Hatborolunko, must be Marianne, Nancy or Aleta just being usual self hiding behind a fake name ashamed because in two years they couldn't manage to do a newsletter, oh wait a minute they couldn't manage to get anything done. The borough always did a newsletter before the ladies took control.

Only 20 cents per household. How many wasteful programs were started with such statistics. I would rather see an independent newsletter that was not connected to the government and didn't cost the taxpayers even a penny a household. Newsletters sponsered by a national, state or local government eventually get around to being a tool used for furthering political careers. This isn't a slam on the current board - I voted for them - but an observation on the nature of politics and politicians.

Dianne, I agree with you about the personal attacks. They need to stop. The newsletter is ok with me in an electronic format. Printing news on paper is costly, time consuming and difficult to edit once it is mailed. We live in a digital age that allows us to save money on printed materials by posting them on the web. I wonder about advertising on a government publication. I can see advertising for nonprofit organizations, but not commercial advertising that may seem to be an endorsement of goods or services by the borough.

I think having a Facebook page would be much more effective. The communication is instant and free. I think many people will throw away a newsletter that is mailed because they see this as just another piece of junk mail. Does Hatboro get the money from the businesses who advertise in this newsletter?

Facebook would help to alert residents of flooding. Newsletters are not the best way to reach residents today. Even websites are a little dated now and that blows mind sometimes! Newsletters are antiques!!!!!

Although I have no objection to an old fashioned printed newsletter I see having it funded by businesses problematic. It would give the appearance that the borough is endorsing the advertised goods and services. Also it could put indirect pressure on those that currently provided professional services to the borough to participate.

Maybe have an outside 3rd party handle the advertising. Not sure if that would cost more money than its worth though.

If council is going to do a newsletter I think they should get to keep the advertising money. The boro would get a free newsletter and businesses would get an ad sent to every home. It is a win for everybody. How much can the borough make doing this newsletter twice a year?

As an owner of a printing/copying company in Hatboro I'm offended that the Boro would use an out-of-town printer. I actually got a call from someone saying they were from the Boro about advertising in the publication. I'm sure it was a salesperson from the printing company that was hired to solicit from the area merchants. How do you say...NO WAY!

That doesn't sound like a very good plan. Did they at least give you an opportunity to provide a cost before going outside of the Borough?

Is the Boro suppose to post all minutes from all meeting online so the public can read?Since we have a local TV chanel can't we just post everything there? Not sarcastic questions, just two questions i don't know the answer to.
